The Falmouth Area

map

Falmouth lies on the South coast of Cornwall between two rivers, the Fal and the Helford, the Fal estuary being one of the finest harbours in the world.
Sailing is very popular here. Both the river Fal and Helford have good facilities and lessons are available. Falmouth's new Maritime museum will soon be ready for visitors.

The town has good shopping facilities, ferry, river and sea trips. The three sandy beaches have safe bathing. There is a cinema/ theatre and entertainments pavillion, several art galleries, castle and swimming pool complex. Summer activities include open air performances of music and drama. Beyond Penzance, the Minack theatre offers the most dramatic cliff-top setting.

A few minutes drive westwards from the town centre are the beaches of Swanpool and Maenporth. About ten minutes' drive takes you to the beautiful Helford passage where you can enjoy a good meal at the Ferry Boat Inn, take the ferry across to Helford, or try various water sports. There are stables with an indoor school at nearby Constantine and a seal sanctuary at Gweek.

The lizard peninsula has many natural delights, plenty of picturesque coves to discover and is rich in history.

The area is rich in artists who hold open studios during August and September. There are summer schools available if you wish to develop your own talents.

The area also has some wonderful gardens; many were set out in the days when Falmouth packet ship captains brought exotic plants from far off lands. These plant flourished in the exceptionally mild Cornish climate and can be seen in their maturity today.

April, May and June are brilliant months for colour in Cornish gardens. Trebah (5 miles), a wonderful valley garden, is open every day except Christmas and offers interest for all ages. Next door is Glendurgan with its time-consuming maze. Garden enthusiasts will also enjoy the many good nurseries.

Don't forget the Eden project, Austell, Cornwall!! map
